Espana Dia Nueve

Madrid is a lovely city that is home to the happiest place on earth....

The Museo De Jamon ( Museum of Ham)
That's right ladies and gentleman... this country loves their jamon so much that they dedicated not one, but two museums to it. It was a jamon lover's dream.
Madrid was also home to the very first restaurant EVAR!! Well at least they claim to be.... they are famous for their suckling pig and suckling lamb. Jay and Michael ordered one of each and they were very happy with the results.
Our days in Madrid were spent wandering around museums which unfortunately wouldn't let us take pictures. The Prado housed a lot of religious art, which I appreciate for art's sake, but it's not really my thing.

The next day we went to the Reina Sofia and saw a huge Picasso exhibit. Again... very fabulous. D & J left after that exhibit and M and i continued on to see the rest of the museum which was contemporary art, definitely more my style than religious. There were some very cool pieces which of course we couldn't take pictures of, but I almost caused an international incident by snapping an illegal photo of this:

It is all carved wood. Every book and page in the book is carved out of wood. It was mind blowing. The guard heard the sound of my camera taking the picture and immediately came over to check things out. I got the camera back in my purse and my facial expression returned to that of "innocent art admirer" quicker than he could figure out what was happening. He looked very confused. I felt very victorious.

One of the mornings D & J went to go visit some people who work in the Madrid office of Jay's company, so Michael and I headed to go see the royal palace (again no pictures inside), but it was fairly impressive. The coolest part by far was the old pharmacy. There were thousands of tiny little bottles with different tinctures and herbs and medicines. And there was also an apothecary with walls lined with tiny little drawers, and the mad scientist laboratory with beakers and strange looking mouse trap contraptions with various liquids and powders. It made me very happy!!!
We then headed to the cathedral because we had time to kill and it was free. We were pleasantly surprised to find that this one was more modern and it was very cool inside with brightly colored murals. As I may have mentioned before, most cathedrals in Europe tend to look alike after you've seen a few, so we weren't surprised to read that this cathedral is very controversial and is considered and eye sore to many.
Michael and I also saw a very cool tapestry exhibit that made me have a new appreciation of tapestries and the incredible amount of work that goes into them. Guess what... no pictures.
That was about it for our time in Madrid, the next night we headed to Barcelona....
